The Three Key Steps to Perfect Furniture Customization

admin   November 25, 2016   Comments Off on The Three Key Steps to Perfect Furniture Customization

Customizing furniture can be a great way for you to show off your creativity. But it comes at a cost. If you’re not careful, the end product as glamorous as it might be, it might not be able to serve the primary function that you had for it.  Ideally, that would mean that you get another trip to the furniture store. It is agreeable that capping your creativity is not the easiest thing to do. However, there are steps that you can follow to make sure that your modern, customized furniture both looks great and serves the intended function. These three steps should help you achieve just that.

Choose a unique style for your unique space

The idea behind customized furniture and especially when it comes to sofas is so that that they can fit in a particular space. Your first goal should be to make sure that the design you choose can work with the space that you have. This makes the chair functional. Chances are, there are a couple of designs that you could choose from all of which will fit in your space. This is where you can let your creativity run loose. Just don’t prioritize style over space because then the product will be useless to you.

Find the perfect color and fabric

The hardest part of building custom-made furniture is the design. Once that has been done successfully, all that is left is the add-ons. These don’t have such a profound impact on the design, and that means that you have more flexibility when making your choices. However, there are a couple of things you ought to consider when picking the fabric and the color.

Among them are whether you have kids around. If yes, you might want to choose a hardy material that is easy to clean. You also have to consider other factors like the feeling you want the piece to project. Even when picking the color, factors like the theme and color of the house play a significant role. For this, you might want to summon your imagination to get a bit of how the end product would look.

Get the details right

When it comes to furniture, it is all in the details and the finishing. If you can do that right, then everything else will fall into place. Even though the general design can be on point, if the details are not, the end product will stick out like a sore thumb. You need to get it done right and to precision. Of course, that means that the detailing might take more time. If it does, let it. Don’t rush it as long as everything turns out how you expected it that is fine.

As the last piece of advice, most people consider the pricing of customized furniture over the top. While it is true that such a piece might cost you more, you might want to consider the quality of work when looking at more affordable prices. Usually, designers and builder will price for only that one piece. If possible, you can ask them for other pieces that they have done in the past before you can commit to having the piece done in any particular place,

It is never a good idea to settle for images and photos. Seeing past work will help boost your confidence in the artistry and will offer you better insight into the capabilities of whoever will be handling the project.

Custom Furniture Myths Busted!

admin   February 9, 2016   Comments Off on Custom Furniture Myths Busted!

Let me start by getting my secret out there about custom-made furniture. I am one of those guys that will get a chair from the mid-century and fuse it with an ultra-modern design. That is how out of control I can get. The good thing is after finding a great furniture manufacturer, I quickly started realizing that some of the things that had made me develop a phobia for custom furniture were actually no more than a myth. Given the fact that everyone likes unique looking furniture, I thought could share some of the myths I have busted along the way with you and with any luck you could have your own custom furniture fitted and experience the benefits that come with this or with the help of certain platform, you can also buy custom made furniture.

Custom Furniture is expensive

Yes, this is one of those myths that you would even try to justify. It takes a lot of resources and since it is a relatively unique design, there is a lot of waste that will be involved. It is a fact that a lot of people will always be blinded by the cost versus the quality of the custom furniture. It is also a fact that while custom furniture might cost more, it is not always the case and in some instances, the factors that drive up the cost have nothing to do with the furniture. These include taxation and even shipping with some easily costing more than the furniture itself costs.

It takes a lot of time to build  digital fabrication 23

This is only true if you decide to take your one of kind custom design to a newbie carpenter or furniture manufacturer. Thanks to the internet and technology, good and capable manufacturers can quickly get the blue prints of the designs and even the measurement. Additionally, the presence of custom machines will definitely speed up the process while still upholding the quality and finish of the piece. As much as the initial design might take some time to put together the actual building time in some instances might even be shorter compared to some of the conventional furniture.

Custom furniture is harder to sell
Shopping for FurnitureHonestly put, no one really wants to buy something that the next person has. Even the public sector is buying custom furniture in the current age.  That is why variation in any product even with cars is critical. People will openly say they love unique things and a while back when I was moving to a new house, I realized how much in-demand custom furniture is. My garage sale was flying off shelf and even the few I posted online did not take more than month get sold out. The queer looking, normal shaped tables that I had found there were left there with even fewer views. If anything, you might find it easier to sell customized furniture because they have a wide market that is lacking supply.

Custom furniture is hard to maintainAvoid-Redecoration-Costs-by-Maintaining-Your-Furniture-in-Good-Shape

As much as it is called custom furniture, it does not require custom materials. Most of the custom furniture differ in terms of design. However, the materials that are used are largely the same and hence the issue of it being complicated to maintain custom furniture should not be much of a problem.

There are a lot of reasons why most people prefer to have custom furniture. They utilize the space you have in the best way possible, they give you an identity and a sense of satisfaction. However, these common myths are usually a great deterrent but now you know better right?

Through the “Looking” Glass

admin   June 2, 2015   Comments Off on Through the “Looking” Glass

One of the most prominent and important items of every home is windows. Without windows we do not receive light or air, and perhaps an advantage many people take for granted, the view. Each home has a different number, style and size of window, and if we take it a step further, each room perhaps. Your own personal needs and desires will determine the type of glass you want for the windows.

2 (1)

The glass used for the windows in a majority of homes is a colourless and distortion-free, standard Clear Float Glass. Though just because this is the most commonly used type of glass, it is not the only available type.

Stained glass has traditionally been used in places of worship, and perhaps may be considered old-fashioned. However, walk into a place that has stained glass installed and the absolute beauty of the colours and designs mixed with natural light, takes one’s breath away. The same effect may be created in your home. Not only is stained glass available in colours, it is also available in different textures of glass, for example; flat, ripple, bevel, and more. Depending on the specific artist, various techniques are used to create scenes for your windows, from traditional designs to the more contemporary and abstract. Keeping all these factors in mind, the sceneries that could be created is limitless.

The actual glass that is manufactured goes through many different processes to produce the type of glass suitable for stained glass windows. With some, glass is heated and cooled to produce “toughened or tempered” glass, i.e. it is harder than float glass and when broken, does not cause shards that are dangerous, but shatters into small pieces that are harmless.

With other manufacturing processes, certain chemicals, and/or materials are added to produce a variety of glass, for example; “extra clear” – allows for brilliant clarity which offers true colours and unimpaired views; or “electrochromatic” – where the amount of light changes according to the sunlight and the aim would be to reduce the need for blinds or curtains.

Once again, taking into account the individual needs and choices for your home, the type of glass for your windows could serve many purposes. “Coated Glass” is produced and manufactured for various purposes and the end-use will determine the type of “coating” on the glass. For the energy conscious, glass that has been processed and coated to absorb heat, keep out harmful UV rays, and allow for good insulation will be a good choice..

Perhaps you are concerned with maintenance, scratches or corrosion. Here again, you would be able to install windows that have been processed with the type of coating addressing these issues. The appearance of the glass is modified when surface coatings are applied, thus giving your windows a different look to the standard float glass.

Now, when thinking of building or renovating your home, keep in mind how the choices you make for the windows can transform the overall efficiency and look of this precious investment.

2015 Color Trends:

How to Make Your Home on Trend

This year is all about blending traditional materials, shapes, prints and decorating ideas.

Versatility is key: in an increasingly crowded world no one can afford to waste space so multi-functionality of objects if becoming more and more important. One of the most obvious examples of this are functional objects recreated as art, Christopher Boots does some amazing light installations that can make any room a masterpiece as well as saving space.

Natural materials are particularly popular this year as people move away from synthetic materials whose production or disposal can cause damage to the environment. The other benefit of natural fibers and materials is a reduction in harmful chemicals around the home, and therefore a safer, healthier and ultimately longer life. Designers are using these materials to highlight contrasting textures, while still creating a natural and earthy feel, which promotes a restful home environment.

Eco-friendly has become the new norm, with a particular focus on materials such as wood, metal, glass and leather. Interior designers are blending these traditional materials into modern designs, mixing different textures and patterns with bold colors.

Key colors this season are Greek blue and sour green with blue, but blues and greens in general are a great choice for 2015, particularly the richer varieties reminiscent of lagoons, Greece and Delft Blue. On the other end of the spectrum are the lighter pastel colors which are another very popular choice for decorators this year. Neutral colors are also very popular, in particular soft grays as well as whites and black.

Decorators are using a lot of clashing patterns in complementary colors to create interest, which gives a room energy and promotes creativity while still invoking the serenity which is one of this year’s key themes.

Regardless of the colors or materials you choose, home decorating this year is all about personality, serenity and versatility.

4 Tips for Buying a Fixer Upper

admin   January 24, 2015   Comments Off on 4 Tips for Buying a Fixer Upper

Thanks for visiting our modern furniture blog! Here’s another article I wrote today about buying fixer uppers. Let me know what you guys think!

With the economy slowly recovering, people everywhere are starting to considering buying a house again. Although house prices are still relatively low, you may be considering buying a fixer upper in order to save some money on your mortgage. Before you make any major commitments, read the rest of this article to determine if a fixer upper is really the house for you.

Location, location, location

If you find a neighborhood that you absolutely love but are having a difficult time finding a home in your price range, then purchasing a fixer upper may be in your cards. Look for a lower-priced home in the same area; chances are, it will require some work to make it shine but it could be worth your time and money.

Budgeting costs

First off, make sure you save some money on the actual move! Google furniture movers in your area and check craigslist. Other than having a mortgage and paying property taxes, you will also need to consider budgeting in costs for any needed renovation work. Make sure to have the house thoroughly and professionally inspected so that you don’t wake up one night to a damage water system. If you think the renovation costs would be too high for your budget, you may want to reconsider buying a fixer upper.

Consider the living conditions

Before you decide to buy a fixer upper home, you will want to ask yourself if you are willing to live in a home undergoing constant construction. Since home renovations notoriously span longer than originally planned, you will have to think if you really would be fine without a working kitchen or bedroom for three months. And, since your budget may not be able to handle these all occurring at the same time, think about how long each room renovation may take if done separately. This is amount of time you may have to live with construction being present in your home.

Professional versus DIY work

If part of your reasoning for purchasing a fixer upper home is the idea of having a hand in working on your home yourself, you may want to consider what work you are truly capable of doing on your own. Assess both your strengths and your weaknesses so that you can be prepared to hand off work to a licensed contractor if needed. Installing wood or tile floors would make for a great project but adding a window to a room or rewiring your home will require more professional hands.

5 Mid-Century Seats Straight Out of Mad Men

With the second half of Mad Men’s final season set to premiere this spring, we decided this would be an opportune time to reflect on the beauty of mid-century furniture. Read on to check out some of the iconic seats that time period gave us.

barcelona chair cream

A rare find in any episode, the Barcelona Chair is perhaps one of the most iconic pieces of furniture from the mid-century modern era. Designed by famed architect Mies van der Rohe, this chair highlights some of the key design elements of modern design such as witnessing the structural elements of the chair and the emphasis on clean, structured lines. Most Barcelona chairs found today are replicas, although some are produced by Knoll Inc. and considered to have greater authenticity at a much higher price.

Seen most often in the conference room of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, the Eames Executive Chair (also known as the Time-Life chair) is the product of design powerhouse couple Ray and Charles Eames. Part of their design philosophy was to create items that were functional and pleasing to both designer and customer. Featuring a plush leather seat and polished aluminum, this chair embodies the finer qualities of office furniture fit for executives.

Another classic Eames chair that received a lot of love on the show was the Eames Management Chair that sat at Don’s desk. A slimmer version of their other office chairs, this features curved, clean lines and a refined design that will go with most contemporary interior spaces.

The Knoll Sofas were predominantly featured in Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce’s creative offices in various colors, most notably in orange in the creative lounge area. This sofa (and it’s loveseat and armchair counterparts) feature the clean, straight lines and 90-degree angles often found in modern design but still embodies the essence such lounge seating should have. The timeless design and luxurious look of this sofa acts as an instant pick-me-up for any living room.

If you remember back to season three when Betty was redesigning the Draper home, she ultimately chose an over-sized, pink Victorian fainting couch to place in the middle of her newly furnished living room. While it may have represented her desire to be seen as a delicate woman to be doted on, it also looked monstrous when squished between her modern furniture. Perhaps a more fitting (and smaller) version that would still call back to the Victorian era would have been the Charlotte Lagoon Linen Chair in our collection. It contains similar design features, such as tufting and dark woods, but is easier to meld with more modern interiors.

4 Furniture Pieces to Style Your Small Living Room

Whether it is your first apartment or you opted to downsize, living in a small apartment doesn’t have to feel like you are living in a shack. By choosing the right furniture to keep in the apartment, it can feel luxurious and stylish. Since most of your guests will first see and spend the most time in the living area, here are our suggestions for beautiful furniture to show off your sense of style.

When looking for seating, choosing a standard loveseat is a great option. It conserves space but still allows room for guests to sit without feeling cramped. Choose a loveseat with clean lines and a lightweight design, such as the Barcelona Loveseat. An incredible example of mid-century design, the Barcelona Loveseat is representative of high style without feeling bulky. Choose to purchase this in a neutral color, such as brown or white, to help keep the room feeling airy.

Another seating option is to add a small armchair to the room. Again, choose one that is stylish but does not add weight to the room. One option is the Dora Beige Linen Chair that has a touch of mid-century design but doesn’t obviously feel tied to any particular time period. The soft frame and neutral color make it feel cozy while the minimal design mimics the expensive wingback chairs of country clubs.

An additional piece of furniture for your living is the coffee table. This will be the place that not only holds your remote and phone but the main place to set down drinks and (depending on how lax you are on rules) rest your feet. Since the room is small, stick with furniture that appears light and has a sculptural element. We suggest checking out the Waterfall Coffee Table for a minimalist look. Made of a single sheet of curved glass, this table appears luxurious without weighing down the room. Remember to keep the accessories here minimal to discourage clutter.

Another classic option is to go with the LC10 Square Coffee Table. Designed by architect Le Corbusier at the height of the modernist era, this coffee table shows of the elegance and minimal features characteristic of modernist designers. The low height, glass top, and chrome legs will add a sophisticated touch to your living room.

Finally, consider getting rid of your old TV stand and instead mount a flatscreen TV to the wall. This will conserve valuable floor space while still including a major source of entertainment in your home.
